INITIAL CONSULTATION

Complimentary teletherapy introduction–is Sequoia Therapy the right match for you?

It is a good idea to interview therapists. Research shows that the alliance between you and your therapist is the strongest indicator of successful outcomes. To try out if Sequoia could be a good match, sign up for a complimentary 30-minute remote session. The virtual meet-and-greet is an opportunity to get to know one another and identify how to attain your goals by working together.

Therapy is a challenging and exciting process. Given you are reading this means you are preparing yourself to undertake that journey or are looking to help someone close to you find the support they need. We can reduce the anguish so you can reclaim more of yourself to move forward. At Sequoia Therapy, we combine evidence-based interventions with a dynamic, individually tailored treatment plan so that sessions attune to your unique needs and do not consume unnecessary time.

INDIVIDUAL TELETHERAPY

MOVE INTO A HAPPIER, LESS DISTRACTED, MORE CONFIDENT PRESENCE

Therapy is a healing process that, when effective, invites participation and investment. I believe you can develop life-changing habits at any age to overcome obstacles. In individual therapy we will help you to become increasingly aware of the interaction between your feelings and thoughts.

Maybe you or an adolescent in your life is feeling down or anxious. Maybe you are a parent or young adult having difficulties with others, are unsure how to navigate boundaries, or just feel that you are not living the life you were meant to lead. Sequoia Therapy focuses their professional experience on helping clients connect to their purpose, grow confident with their natural tools, and succeed through self-understanding. By making small changes, you can curtail self-defeating behaviors, bring dynamic results, and adopt new attitudes towards challenging situations.

We excel in treatment of anxiety, depression, mood disorders, cognitive distortion, autism, externalizing behavior, and family conflict. At Sequoia we are devoted to engaging in effective healing work that is culturally sensitive and informed by social justice values. Our clients may connect with diverse sexual, gender, national, ethnic, religious, and cultural identities, yet identity may and may not be part of what brings them to therapy. Whatever your needs may be, rather than mechanical treatment plans, we give personalized attention to creatively tailor treatment plans to individual goals.

CHILD & ADOLESCENT COUNSELING

PLAY THERAPY

Many children and adolescents need support to develop a vocabulary to articulate their distress. Play therapy is less direct approach to building insight that allows a child's content to arise naturally. Through the metaphor of games and play, themes can coalesce while avoiding retraumatization.

At Sequoia Therapy, play and art are processes by which a child can work more comfortably on issues that may be too hard to speak about or mentally focus on. If you sense your child's behavior or emotional distress is beyond their current understanding a more arts-based approach can form the bridge they need to greater insight and self-control.

Our developmentally sensitive approach evolves with your child’s self-understanding. We build a shared vocabulary to develop how to articulate and be in greater control of their reactions to frustrating experiences. Integrating Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) techniques to develop better emotion regulation skills in combination with Alderian play therapy (a less directive, more individually led use of toys, art, story telling and role-play) to build your child's behavior-modulation skills, and gradually empower their verbal language to speak about and proactively prepare to navigate triggers causing distress.

GROUP COUNSELING

Parent, Adolescent & Young Adults Group

Presently we are recruiting members for three different teletherapy groups at Sequoia: A Parent's Group, the Adolescent Group (12-15 y/o), and Young Adults/College Group (18-24 y/o). Many of us struggle with being authentic and speaking up for ourselves at home, at school and in our careers. Likewise some people over communicate, or react so strongly that the tone used compromises the message. At Sequoia we see group therapy as an art. We use a hybrid model that cultivates interpersonal engagement and mutual support: There will be opportunity to address themes in relation to one another and address their lives outside of the group. Group is a social microcosm and is not as daunting as one may fear because of a clear beginning and end. Within this frame members gradually recognize similarities with their peers and a critical layer of isolation dissolves. Try our group therapy to help you relate better with others, and yourself, in a more adaptive, healthier manner.

There is a misconception that group members take turns receiving individual attention from the therapist while others sit back or tune out. Our approach is entirely different. A Sequoia clinician facilitates group cohesion as you turn increasingly to one another for support, give feedback and navigate your connections. The process yields greater comfort as you increasingly aid one another in developing your individual and group voice, rather than rely on a clinician.

Upon completion of group therapy, you will be increasingly aware of your own feelings and needs for expressing them, as well as have the tools for speaking up and having a better sense of how to flexibly maintain boundaries that are responsive to others without compromising your values.

FIRST RESPONDER & EMERGENCY HEALTH WORKER COUNSELING

If you are a public health care worker, thank you. Protecting the health of the community is vital. Come talk to us. As a health care worker you have adjusted to inhabiting the front line and take pride in the ability to perform within an intense environment but intermittently aware of the impact successive shifts have on you, and your peers. Frequently the work load is split unevenly when understaffed or institutional policy fails to moderate work tempo and shift overload passes a tipping point.

Common to EMS professionals, nurses and police officers is an absence of space to recover between traumatic encounters. As a result the resiliency you've developed can gradually erode and echos of depression, acute stress, rumination, intrusive memories and accompanying conditions such as compassion fatigue, emotional withdrawal, negative appraisal, substance use and chronic pain may arise. Extended hours in demanding circumstances can cause resentment, fatigue, emotional numbing, job dissatisfaction, compromised focus, divorce and chronic pain.

If you are feeling burnt out and tension integrating work experiences, Sequoia Therapy can help. We have can help to alleviate the compression and diffuse the cycle through processing, reconnection and prevention. Sequoia Therapists are familiar with front-line workers as our staff have served with police officers on mobile crisis intervention, conducted hand-offs with Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) and counseled hospital staff during the height of the COVID-19 surge in March and April. A therapist will help alleviate the negative effects by working through material you do not want to bring home and being an ally in addressing negative appraisals and broadening coping skills to mitigate or eliminate emotional fatigue.

If you are a manager and would like Sequoia to consult, reach out to us to help your team integrate protective strategies, clarify communication pathways, facilitate greater social support and organizational awareness to improve relationships and ensure ongoing prevention.
